Team GB Olympic Football

2012 August 01

In August 2012 the Olympic Games came to Cardiff. Men's football was staged at the Millennium Stadium, and Sam's cousin Fabia had secured tickets for a double-header: Mexico v Switzerland as the warm-up, followed by GB v Uruguay. Fabia and Marie came to stay for a couple of days and enjoyed spending time with Poppy. The day of the match brought sunshine and showers, but when we got out of the taxi at Central Station it had eased off a bit. Sam and I had places in the disabled section, while Kate and Fabia were in the second tier on the other side of the ground. The crowd gradually built up through the first game, and by the time GB kicked off there were nearly 75,000 in the ground. The game wasn't the most thrilling, but a Sturridge goal just on half time was enough to give GB the points. The crowd cheered for Aaron Ramsey and Craig Bellamy, and booed Luis Suarez every time he touched the ball. Giggsy was on the bench, but wasn't needed. What was probably the best thing was the atmosphere in the stadium, which was relaxed and cordial - not always the case for a football match. Sam loved it all, especially the chance to spend some time with cousin Fabia.
