Tour of Britain 2012

As a family we love cycling, and Sam had seen the Tour de France twice - once in Brittany in 1998 and again in London and Kent in 2007, where Geraint Thomas spotted his Welsh flag and greeted him as he sped past. So when the Tour of Britain came to Caerphilly we just had to go. We went to the cafe at the top of the mountain and were lucky enough to get a parking space, thanks to Kate's creativity. We took up our positions at the summit line and waited for the action to start. Luckily the weather was kind, because we had quite a long wait. The riders were making their way down from Mid Wales and were running late, so delicious refreshments from the cafe were well received. The crowds built up, and so did the tension despite the disappointing news that Bradley Wiggins, 2012 Tour de France winner, was not riding that day due to a stomach upset. We didn't mind too much as we knew that 'Cav' was still in the field. Sam and Poppy were having fun together and the crowd was in festive mood. We knew that things were about to happen when the helicopter appeared over Caerphilly. All at once the first riders appeared over the crest of the hill and the action had begun. They made two circuits and we enjoyed seeing Cav, although he certainly didn't seem to be going flat out. He was probably just relieved to get over the mountain the second time. Probably the most exciting moment came when Lindsay took on an English guy who tried to push in front of Sam to get a better view - big mistake!
